In today’s fast-paced world, technology is playing a crucial role in every aspect of life. The constant evolution of technology is marked by several technological advancements, like satellite- and space-based technologies, and artificial intelligence is shifting the focus of the world towards a more digital world. A critical difference between earlier times and this era of conflict is the potential role of technology in peacebuilding. The rapid increases in technological advancements have the potential to make changes in social, cultural, and political conflicts in societies around the world and can create a peaceful environment through early warning systems and responses. This article aims to explore the ways in which technology can provide peaceful resolutions and mitigate conflicts.
In the context of criminal violence and armed conflict, the use of technologies like surveillance and intelligence systems can help to monitor potential conflict and facilitate diplomatic efforts to resolve that certain type of conflict. Satellite imagery aids in monitoring crime data and also helps to mitigate the effects of war through satellite images and intelligence systems. Governments can easily mobilize resources and evacuate citizens. Moreover, in the context of election-related violence, the use of biometrics can stabilize the democratic mechanism, and innovative information and communication technologies are being used by various countries for conflict prevention. For example, CEWARN (conflict early warning and response mechanism) is being used in Kenya to prevent conflict arising in the electoral process. Furthermore, social media platforms and tools are also being used for peaceful education and also play a role in post-conflict reconciliation. Crowdsourcing practice highlights diverse perspectives and resolves problems accordingly. Technologies like communication platforms also facilitate dialogue, provide a means to interact with each other, and facilitate the resolution of problems easily. Advances in renewable energy and sustainable technologies can address resource-related conflicts, fostering environmental stability.
By harnessing these tools, societies can work towards fostering understanding, reducing tensions, and ultimately promoting peace and the overall well-being of their societies.
