This article explores the cybersecurity tensions between the US and China by reviewing the news from Al Jazeera. As the world becomes more interconnected, the risks and consequences of cyberattacks increase. The importance of cybersecurity in IR cant be denied for establishing peace, preventing conflicts, and increasing collaboration around the world. In this regard, the cybersecurity tensions between the US and China are the main concern. Recently, due to a number of cybersecurity threats linked to the Chinese government, the tension has increased. According to the FBI, the cybersecurity issues between China and the USA are increasing day by day. It has been said that China has been involved in illegal activities for the past 5 years, specifically focusing on hacking the 5 Eyes countries. This is done through the Volt Typhon, which is basically a China-sponsored hacking group. Through this, they are involved in US infrastructure, including communication, transport systems, oil pipelines, naval ports, the electric grid, aviation, water, energy, etc. The FBI reported that China wants to control Western infrastructure, and this has become frustrating for the US. On the other hand, China denies its involvement in this regard. They also claim that the Chinese government is not a supporter of Volt Typhon. Due to the increased interconnectedness of the world, future wars will be cyberwars. China is facing a lot of criticism due to this issue. This will be challenging for both powers and will also affect their relations. To tackle this issue, the US should cooperate with other Western nations to develop strong cyber defenses. The US government is taking many steps to ensure their security and prevent further damage. CISA is also trying to identify the affected devices, but the matter still hasn’t been resolved.
In conclusion, the cybersecurity issues between the US and China become dominant because they are basically related to the national security of the country. It is a serious threat to US infrastructure and ultimately harmful to US superpower status and relations between the two main powers. It requires more attention by taking major steps, promoting responsible behavior in cyber defense, and engaging in constructive dialogue. This may lead to a secure and stable digital future.
